Bobotie… California Style

It takes all of this... and more!

I have thoroughly enjoyed baking up some ‘Bobotie” since Karen turned me on to it!

One might describe the dish as a ‘casserole’… but that says more about the container than what goes inside it. My adventure to discover the history of Bobotie, where it came from, who helped shape and develop this interesting dish was quite a journey of exploration. I also had the opportunity to investigate what is ‘curry’ and discover how that helped ‘simplify’ the recipe but how it also changed it.

It is clear that the Dutch brought this initially popular ‘Italian’ recipe to Southern African in the 17 th century… or at least that’s the story. From here, it is clear that the British and the Cape Malay’s had a distinct influence on it’s evolution. Today, there are a wide variation in Bobotie recipes… but they are more similar than different. The recipe substituting Yogurt for the 1 cup milk was one of the more interesting to me.

If you search Bobotie, you will find ‘modern’ recipes from all over the world, emphasizing their own personal seasoning preferences. However, most of the recipes I found were British, German, South African and –of course– Dutch sites.

So, I robbed from everyone without regard to expense… and  here’s my recipe…  sweet and yummy.

Fortunately, it’s very good on my ‘healthy food’ meter and great when you have folks hanging around to test things out!

Jenny Craig Update… down 85 lbs

me at 234

Well… we dropped in for our weekly weigh-in at  Jenny Craig.

Somehow, when you are down 85 lbs. and nearing my goal… you wonder when to stop?

Frankly, I am feeling fine at this weight and I may drop a little more… but wearing a size 32 pair of jeans is just amazing to me! I joke that I plan to donate some of the sizes I  ‘passed through’ (including 36’s) to some of my friends who might need these ‘fat’ clothes. ha!

On the left — in case your are wondering — I am enjoying some “Biltong” that Karen brought back from South Africa. This piece came from Kruger Park and it is Springbok! Yes, very yummy!

Everyone in the family has been on Jenny Craig… and it seems like — collectively — we have lost a small Toyota.

Now… I will reward myself on Sunday with a South African ‘Bobotie’… a recipe that I have been exploring and I will post my recipe.

a REAL 50 mph H.P.V.*

* Human Powered Vehicle

a real 50 mph vehicle

Is it a toy? Is it practical? If it takes your entire body to power it, how easy is it to steer? Sooooo many questions… in the meantime, it looks very cool.

I received an email from the  ol SciFi.Com folks  … and since I have been a fan of recumbent bikes, I thought I’d give it a look.  The HyperBike folks have a nice web site  and it looks like they have more in the future:

“For the next prototype, which he hopes to begin work on soon, DeForest has garnered technical assistance that begins to address some of the issues the current prototype presents. He has attracted attention from the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program, a NASA-funded program based in Florida with offices throughout the country.”

For the rest of us… we’ll have to see if this develops into something practical… it already looks fun!

the “Cracked Crab” in Pismo Beach!

Karla at the fabulous

My daughter Karla wanted to do somethng ‘special’ while her mother was in Tennessee with her sister Karen. I asked Karla to make a list… and not too surprisingly, she came up with a list of dining experiences.

One of these experiences included the “Cracked Crab” in Pismo Beach. Here Karla is showing off some of her “Alaskan King Crab”. They brought a bucket of seafood and Karla enjoyed it all.

As for me, I am on Jenny Craig… I just sat there and watched!
