Stargate or Star Trek or Star Wars or all three ?

Star Trek or Stargate they are all good! I seldom blog on science fiction, but science fiction is a subject that has always fascinated and captured the interest of me and my family. Science non-fiction is valued as well.

So whether it be any of the Star Treks or the wonderful Stargate Series, there is always time reserved.

Some of my fondest memories is of our children climbing into bed with us to watch Star Trek Next Generation ( I am scene here as either a ‘Captain’ but my likely a mischievous “Q”.

So here is my small tribute to all the fans out there who love Science Fiction… or Harry Potter.

Jenny Craig, me and South Africa

Just me and Jenny Craig

Well, here I am at the Los Angeles Zoo. Thanks to Jenny Craig I am down  68 lbs  which feels very good. The problem is that according to the BMI (Body Mass Index) I am ‘very obese’…. which is funny since I am 6’4″ and wear a size 36 pair of shorts. However, I plan to drop a bit more.

Karen is in South Africa with her cookbook by Jenny Craig and an entire case of Jenny Craig “complete Start” cereal… so she’s all set. She said she was going to take a picture of her J.C. case, her and Capetown and send it to the fine people at Jenny Craig.

Sometimes, I think with all the feasting and famine in human history that we are naturally prone to yo-yo in our dieting… but I like it here as a thiner me… so I plan to continue losing and stay a while… if not forever.

University Campuses Need Oversight

Administrators and other forms of life

It appears that Evan Maloney’s long awaited documentary on what goes in college campuses is finally peeking out for the rest of us to see. “indoctrinate U” is nothing new for most of us who had to endure the rants of the great unwashed on campuses during the ’60’s, but it is amazing how institutionalized it has become. The dumbing down of college curricula has had the effect of rewarding ‘compliance over achievement’…. which I don’t think is a good thing.

In a review entitled ‘Academic Thuggery’ that also appeared on the Drudge Report an interesting background is presented on the making of ‘Indoctrinate U’… check out the trailer.

Congrats, Evan.

South Africa

Karen is in South Africa

My daughter Karen is in South Africa and trying to get her arms around the issue of ‘jet lag.’ And although she has not been to this part of the world before, she definitely came prepared:  baggage that is virtually indestructableeye masks & travel pillow  for sleeping on planes and a phone that will definitely operate in South Africa. These may sound like simple things, but is amazing how many experienced travelers make their journey that much more difficult by forgetting to plan ahead. I am sure Karen will write something  on her blog  about all that is going on.

Karen has a lot going on in the months ahead… but she sounds enthusiastic and excited about the  new South Africa. Afterall,  Cape Town Fashion week  is not all that far off!

As for me, I discovered the best phone rate to  South Africa is on IDT  and all incoming calls to Karen are free…  and we had our first 20 minute conversation for $4. Even Dads need to hear from their girls.

For the Love of Wine!

the more lusty comrades of King Author's Court

I think to truly appreciate the human experience requires many understandings, certainly the enjoyment of wine is among them.

Years ago, I joined a fun troup of wine lovers entitled Knights of the Vine. They further introduced me into the lore and rich history of Wine… in particular, California Wine. The founder, the late Norman Gates, brought me into the brotherhood back in 1979. Although I have not been active in the organization for quite some time, I found it educational and enjoyable.

” Water divides world population, wine gather it”

Another way to get started is to try something new now and again, sign up for periodic wine purchases, and possibly buy a book or two on the subject.

Then there is the story of Jean Montidier… aaaah, that’s for another time.

Jean Montdidier... an amusing fellow
