Oscar Weeeeeners!

Everyone knows I am not a big fan of the Oscars… primarily because this event is in no way in touch with reality. These awards are run by ‘gatekeepers’ who do not reflect the American public in any way and judge entertainment solely with respect to their personal politics… and consequently, ‘their’ selections rank as some of the most…. uninteresting.

Al the Puffer FishCase in point, the award for bad science was give to Al Gore’s ‘documentary’… just a plea to get the United Nations more into our lives. However, old Al was impressive in getting the Oscar for the ‘Best Imitation of a Puffer Fish’!

It could have been a funny and fun night… but it wasn’t. Here’s one thing that might have even enticed me to watch:

“Nor did Sacha Baron Cohen appear. Asked to be a presenter, he said he would do it only if he could be in character as Borat. But the Powers-That-Be said, “No way,” thus eliminating what surely might have been an oasis of humor in a desert of mediocrity. Morons. “

There was one redeeming feature… the male stars wore Armani tuxedos .. very cool.

the ‘Oscar’ gets the “Weenie’!

the SUPERBOWL for women?

I really do try to give the ‘Oscars’ some thought… and I always hope that they will pull their head out of a very dark place and find something we can all get behind… but then….THAT wouldn’t be ‘art’ then would it?

Art is supposed to be stuff that we ‘don’t understand’ or ‘don’t like’ but… is suppose to be good for us, educate us and help us build a better world. riiiight!

Now that takes me to the movies that are supposed to be in consideration for “Best Picture.” This is a category of movies that few people generally ever see… and the winner is usually the one that no one sees at all. So, what do the ‘masters’ tell us are the best of the best?

“this Sunday is up for grabs among the far-flung ensemble drama

“Babel,” the crime epic

“The Departed,” the war story “Letters From Iwo Jima,

” the road comedy “Little Miss Sunshine”

and

the British-royalty tale “The Queen.”

So… with ‘classics like these…  I am surprised that Obama isn’t presiding over the effort. so now for the BIG AWARD…. and the winner of this year’s “Weenie Award” is the entire “Academy”!
the highly coveted Big weenie Award....

Thanks Jenny Craig….. Closing in on 50 lbs!

42.6 pounds down with Jenny Craig...

It finally happened! I passed up Laura in absolute pounds lost 42.6 on Jenny Craig to 41 something… it doesn’t matter that she is a mere slip of a girl and her percentage is huge… it’s absolute pounds that mattter! ha! I was worried as I ate huge at Karen’s track banquet at USC… on Sunday.

I lost 6 pounds in the weeks ahead of Jenny… so 48 is my real total… but no matter… it was a good week in dropping 6.2 lbs.

Kenneth Cole Fashion & Business Smart

Kenneth ColeOkay, time to talk about fashion and the mulitbillion dollar industry that is not about ‘inner beauty’. ( I love that line… by Nigel in ‘the Devil wears Prada’)

As with many people, we don’t know what we like until we see it, touch it, feel it… or in the case of my wife and daughters… until they try it on and some one shouts,”dah-ling, you look so ravashing… wonderful… you must have it!”

As I am now playing ‘Nigel’ to the women in my life… it brings me to another line I have used and enjoy,” you will take what I give you… and you will like it!” It ends discussion right away.

This brings me now to Kenneth Cole… who’s simple styling is timeless and tells a great story… anyone who can sell 40,000 pairs of shoes out the back end of a trailer in 2 1/2 days to get the business started… is very cool. Here’s an exerpt:

“…With Kenneth Cole Productions painted on the side of the truck, we parked at 1370 6th Avenue, across from the New York Hilton, the day of shoe show. We opened for business with a fully furnished 40 ft trailer, a director (Sometimes there was film in the camera, sometimes there wasn’t), models as actresses, and two of New York’s finest, compliments of Mayor Koch, as our doormen. We sold 40 thousand pairs of shoes in two and a half days (the entire available production) and we were off and running.”

Oh… I did buy a few things of his … and they will like it!

‘Mason Weaver Day’ at Cal Poly!

Mason Weaver and his booksYears ago, Mason Weaver came to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to speak…. and there begins a tale.

Mason’s talk was exactly the same as the title of his book” It’s ok to leave the plantation.” His appearance at Cal Poly resulted in the threatened expulsion of a young college student Steven Hinkle, national media discussion on the value of ‘free speech’ and finally the vilification of Cal Poly and much taxpayer money given to Steven Hinkle.

Mason describes his book “It’s ok to leave the plantation”:

“Wisdom does not come from surviving but from thriving. This book discusses some of the family and environmental contributions that led to my change from liberal to conservative. It also discusses how Black Americans came from slavery to freedom.” “It’s OK To Leave The Plantation examines the ‘Plantation mentality’ that still plagues us today. The Plantation Mentality is a system that discourages independence and character and encourages reliance on masters or appointed tribal chiefs in our community.”

Mason may not change your views… but he may give you a new way to look on what really is ‘help’ and what really ‘works’ in our society.

Mason returned to Cal Poly last night after a number of years in what could be called his ‘triumphal return.’ It was ‘Mason Weaver Day at Cal Poly’… an annual event.
