High Temps in San Luis Obispo

the secret in San Luis ObispoWell, for those here in SLO town who get a little smug for having a year around temperature of between 60-80 degrees… every once in a while we get our comeupance.

I do remember one October 13th… possible a Friday, while laying out the sod on my new lawn the temperature reached the highest in the nation that day of 113! Whew! It seemed like so much more…. not Iraq hot… but hot!

In any event, folks in this part of the world are not used to this… and we tend to be underprepared.

For example, even the most environmentally inefficient home has never found the need for air conditioning… so, people start hanging out in the stores.

As for me, well… we’ll shut down the ol compters and fix something cold!

Hope your day is going well!

Cal Poly : learning to do Bad by Doing

Shows Us the Conteract with Saudi ArabiaWell, the ever popular and hard to find President Warren Baker of Cal Poly State University San Luis Obispo decided that he was going to proceed with his scheme of doing business with one of the smaller backwater gender apartheid universities of Saudi Arabia.

Very few people haven’t heard of this idea… because it has been covered nationally…. and most think this isn’t a great plan… except possibly those hiding in a cave somewhere in Afghanistan.

Nevertheless, Warren Baker promised to show the world the ‘contract’ he is offering the Saudi’s …. as he is so proud of it.

Recently, however, it was determined that he ‘misspoke’ because one of his handlers corrected the statement that no contract will be available for viewing…. ever … by anyone.

Funny, Why would anyone so proud of a contract not be willing to show both the English and Arabic versions? It doesn’t take a Ph.D. to figure this out.

So now Saudi Arabia has its own American University from which great things can happen.

Years from now, I hope we remember who started this.

Yahoo’s Shine… doesn’t

Yahoo's Shine... doesn't
Yahoo’s “Shine” …. doesn’t. That’s it in a nutshell.

Now, I fully realize that this is a site that is geared toward women between the ages of 24-54 and nearly 40 million of them… but it just seems like a grown up version of the “Miss Bimbo” site that created so much controversy in Britain.

Now, although I understand the marketing angle going on here, I can’t get my arms around the idea that we are really building on a ‘separate but equal’ theme… whereby,  women can spend their lives on this site, read, buy stuff, check their email and never leave. It sounds all too close to those ‘girl’s only’ clubs and schools that seem to benefit no one… including the girls who suffer them.

As a father of three daughters, I have tried to help my daughters prepare for the world by keeping them involved and compete at the ‘A’ standard with accomplished men & women, rather than staying in some minor females-only league.

Yes, men and women are different. However, to compete successfully in the world, we must look at it honestly away from the comfort and security of gender segregation that sites like “Shine” present.

To truly ‘shine’, one must be in ‘the mix.’

The World to Cal Poly, “the Saudis are a Bad Deal!”

Who thought this was a good idea?Unless you have been living in some sort of backwater or under a regime intolerant of diverse opinions, you no doubt have heard that Cal Poly is trying to put together a ‘deal’ with their new friends in Saudi Arabia. Here’s the deal:

Saudi Arabia is looking to mine the high-tech expertise of American universities. The country recently set its sights on Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which would set up an engineering program in Saudi Arabia. But the lucrative contract comes with a caveat: The Saudi university doesn’t allow women in its engineering courses. That doesn’t sit well with Cal Poly students, who circulated a petition demanding further discussion.

The world has also been listening, and they haven’t said “no”… they’ve said “HELL NO!” Here’s what others are saying!

Minding the Campus– American Campuses in the Mid-East:not for everyone.

03/13/08 –“U.S. universities pride themselves on their tolerance – religious, ethnic, gender-based, sexual orientation-based, whatever. But when it comes to lucrative consulting fees for partnering with universities in Mideastern countries where none of the above categories of toleration seems to exist, the campus open-mindedness apparently evaporates, and a strange variety of mulitculturalism takes over.”

Other print media has also been very explicit on their objections to the deal:
