Tinus Oelofse and the perfect hunting knife

My Custom Hunting Knife made by Tinus Oelofse

Before I go any farther, let me say that I have never given kudos to custom hunting knife makers. There are many reasons, but let me just say that a knife shouldn’t be no more dangerous for you to use than to look at. I also think a lot of knife makers produce products for the Lilliputian market rather than for Gulliver and although the materials are sometimes glitzy they don’t wear well, can’t hold an edge or too hard to sharpen.

This past weekend we were in Las Vegas attending the  Safari international Convention.  I visited every booth and came away with two items: a knife I bid on in an auction and a custom hunting knife by  Tinus Oelofse  that I bought from him directly. I consider Tinus’s knife worth the trip alone.

Although Tinus makes knives utilizing a variety of materials, I prefer the Swedish Steel referred to as AEB-L he used in mine. Some of my chef knives are made of this wonderful material, here’s how a friend describes it:

” AEB-L (also called 13C26 ) steel was designed for razors, which need corrosion resistance, high hardness and very acute edges. Once you try a knife that is made with AEB-L you will see why it is coveted by knife enthusiasts and professionals. The knife will take a very keen edge just like the best carbon steels yet you don’t have to worry about rusting. You will also find much better sharpening properties since AEB-L is less prone to produce wire edges that are so common when you sharpen most high end Japanese kitchen knives. “

Although a young knife manufacturer, Tinus has a good understanding of marketing and presentation.

Even the final presentation was a work of art!

This will be one of the knives I will be taking on my next hunting trip…. and many more after.

BTW, Tinus Oelofse will be at the  Blade Show  ( everything from hunting to kitchen knives) in Atlanta June 8th -10th , 2012.

virtual travel to Greece in music and food

Music and Food ( not necessarily in that order) are a window into cultural life.
Music and Food ( not necessarily in that order) are a window into cultural life.

Our daughters and Laura recently returned from Greece with a pictures and tales of their adventures that kept me entertained. I have always loved Greek food starting from my youth and I have tried to seek it out in my travels with more or less success.

Music of Greece

So I watch their slides, listen to music , drank wine (yes, quite good now-a-days and the Greeks make a nice Merlot), cooked up wonderful food and enjoy my Baklava... so I closed my eyes and  I am almost there!

my life in ruins — the movie

00aTearJerkerThere is a scene in this wonderfully fun movie that… has romance, a bad guy, action and genuine sentiment. The scene pictured above is of Richard Dryfus  ( Irv) kissing his wife’s hand and as corny as it might appear out of context… it was moving and sweet.

Here’s a link to read about the movie.

They have a nice quiz on Facebook, which interestingly enough told me I was the goddess “Hera”… oddly enough, there were no god choices! 🙂

See it with someone you love.

Many nice thoughts from Greece

a real Greecian Treasure
a real Grecian Treasure

My family was very kind and sympathetic and it would be unkind if I did not take the time to thank them for their interesting gifts.

Laura picked up some Pistachios fro the Island of Aegina for me. Aegina is the home of the best Pistachios in the world… and since I make the best Baklava in the world ( according to them), then I must have the best Pistachios!!! I can hardly wait to make more!

Kristin surprised me with a number of unexpected gifts. I could never guess that she would buy me such interesting things. ‘Things’ that sent me to the internet to discover their history and left me fascinated! She found for me a signet ring used by an obviously high and mighty official in the Ottoman empire to sign his documents… very nice. I look more impressive now.  Karen and Kristin bought me some great cook books… I especially want to try the Mousaka!

It’s nice to be remembered… thank you ladies.

Dad

They love Greece, but they love my Baklava best!

Family in Greece
Family in Greece

Laura, Kristin and Karen came together for a week in Greece and soon they will be departing for their homes and assignments. Although I would have enjoyed being with them, I felt like I was actually there by seeing and talking to them on Skype and seeing all of their fantastic pictures!

Whether it was the truth, or whether they were just trying to make me feel good… they all said my Baklava was best. Laura even brought some along to share! Laura did say she was bringing some Greek Pistachios home for me… I wonder what she wants me to do with them!

Next time, I’ll try and tag alone, in the meantime, welcome home, Laura!
