Egg Nog of which George Washington would approve

a few additions to start George Washingtons Eggnog
a few additions to start George Washington's Eggnog

Not only was George Washington our first president, but he also passed down a variety of recipes that are part of his impressive legacy. He had an interesting recipe for beer, but my favorite was his most ‘powerful’ egg nog! It seemed to be a lot of nog and little else. His original recipe is incomplete — as seems to be the habit from the time — leaving out the most simple of ingredients : spices and eggs. In addition, not many recipes from that period discussed the HOWS of making this or that and left that for you. They either thought the process was obvious or thought too much conversation would let too many secrets loose! Sounds all too much like my grandmother.

Here’s what was written:

1/2 cup sherry
1 cup rum (from Jamaica in those days)
1 cup rye whiskey*
2 cups brandy
3/4 cup sugar
4 cups whole milk
4 cups cream (heavy whipping cream**)

* American whiskey’s popularity resulted from the British preventing rum from reaching their ungrateful colonies during the American Revolution. viva la revolution!

** today’s ‘cream’ is a very poor substitute for what was called ‘cream’ of even fifty years ago, so use heavy whipping cream.

Stay tuned and I will post a step-by-step recipe with pictures!

By the way, some positive trends around the corner: the  ‘super sized’ portions of restaurants are getting scaled back, you and I are more important to others than a professional food critic and greater effort and variety is being placed into special meals and the return of everyday comfort foods!

Thanksgivings are Happy with turgoosens

a TurGOOSen : a Chicken within a Goose within a Turkey
a TurGOOSen : a Chicken within a Goose within a Turkey

Thanksgiving day is a wonderful time to bring out old favorites and to try some new traditions. Don’t let the picture fool you, this is one of those wonderful bird-within-a-bird recipes. In this case it is a chicken within a goose within a turkey. The only skin and bones are from the turkey and the only bones of the turkey that remain are the legs and wings! Ready for the oven!

I am using a cornbread dressing that I discussed in a previous post. The rest of the meal is a refection of the various tastes assembled: either potatoes au gratin or sweet yams, cranberry sauce, various additions such as Gerkens, olives, gravy, various cooked and seasoned vegetables and dessert of choice is Carrot Cake with Amarula creamcheese frosting.

Since we are being festive, champagne is a wonderful accompaniment.

Enjoy your day and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Twilight is a movie for our times

Putting the Bite back into romance!I like a movie that’s putting the ‘bite’ back into romance!

Twilight established it’s base with its ever popular romace novelesque books containing a twist. To say that a vampire can be a ‘good guy’ is part of the fun.

Check out the trailers on Yahoo!

What do you think? Ready to  tatoo  your body with Twilight trivia? How about “when the lion falls in love with the lamb.” This one fits for me…
Here’s a good review on “Twilight.”

Oh yes, there will be a sequel!

Come to my bar

whatya have, buddy?

I have found one of the most clever sites in a long time! It’s actually a way to introduce folks to the art and science of ‘mixology.’ In this shaken and not stirred site, ‘Jack’ the bartender introduces you to various concoctions with finesse and a story… sometimes a song!

Check it out!

Obviously, “Jack” has something to sell and he does it with a flare. However, he gives drink recipes, ideas and delightful videos and stories.
