Family Fun at grandma Char’s

fun and games at Grandma Char's

I believe in the ‘perpetual learner.’ This is the concept that we are forever students… willingly taking in new ideas and experiences and hopefully understanding a bit more of our world. Yep. I learned a lot this weekend.

My mother aka Grandma Char had a fun family gathering this weekend and although I was told I wouldn’t have to cook… here I am running the BBQ! It was only afterwards that my nephew and his bud confesses to being BBQ masters! Hmmm… I was played. Laura and Karen brought Carrot Cake, Apple Pie and Ice Cream and my sister Jennifer donated all the meat and sausage It was wonderful!

One small problem… Laura was kind enough to run home and grab some of my cutting tools… in particular a  Cutco brand knife of which I am becoming very fond.

Karen and I posted all of the pictures on Facebook… they’re public.

a New Phone for Mom

Mom's New Phone

Well, it’s not often than Mom lags in any area of new technology… except her antique phone.

Finally, armed with all of her likes  (full keyboard) and dislikes (touch phone), I found her a phone which will — among other things — allows her to auto into FaceBook.

Now, I won’t have to watch her struggle with her text messages and such.

Happy early birthday, sweetheart.

Cal Midstate Fair: Fun, Animals & Cutlery

Lots of fun at the California Midstate Fair in Paso Robles!

Every year we travel the short hop to the California Midstate Fair in Paso Robles, California!

Obviously, Karla loves the Carousel and the animals… but there is always so much more… I enjoy shopping with the vendors! There were a few I spent an inordinate amount of time… particularly the folks from Cutco … they make interesting cutlery. I’ll buy a knife to see how it works for me… and this one had a lot of appeal.

My New Cutco Brand Knife.... so far... it works great!

It’s as sharp as it looks!

I did happen to watch the diddy on “Modern Marvels” that appeared on the “History Channel”. The story was interesting and well told.  Here it is!

Cutco on the History Channel
Looks like my new knife will get a work out tomorrow… if I like it, I’ll buy more.

A Spa In a Teahouse … my little hideaway!

build once.... to last longer

I was very fond of my father-in-law Ed Sievers. Ed would always say that his biggest regret in the home he built to raise his family was that he never designed a space for himself… a place where he could relax, read or enjoy simple things…. like his Scotch.

15 years ago, I took his advice to heart and constructed a mahogany tea-house with a large spa… and a small refrigerator to contain various refreshments. This is certainly not something unique… but good for the soul. Amazing how clear things become when you can step back for a moment or two.

So, here I am reconstructing my little teahouse roof hoping to squeeze a few more years of life out of it… and it’s coming along just fine!

Wall-E says ‘You’re Fat’… get over it

Wall-E features loads... and I mean wide loads of fat people!

Yesterday, Laura and I went to see the new hit movie ‘Wall-E’. It was a relaxing diversion with a sweet — and some might say – romantic ending.

However, there was quite a bit of distress in the audience causing squirming in the seats and a virtual ending of the frequent sounds of the spilling of popcorn, munching of goodies and sloshing of drinks. What was so shocking that all activity stopped? It was the representation of the ‘human space travelers’ that had over the course of a 700 year evolution ‘evolved’ into reclining ‘lardos’… watching t.v. , eating junk food and ‘living’ 24-7 from their traveling recliners! It was not a pretty site … and for those in the theater who felt ‘fat’ … it stopped them cold. This was good, it made them think!

However, the ‘fatties’ and the ‘codependents’ on the internet have launched a huge ruckus about the allegedly anti-fat people bias of the movie. Frankly, I think it is a public service. The message is simple… lose weight and become more active.

Try and find a picture of the ‘fat astronauts’ of Wall-E on the internet… I found the one above and that’s it! Sounds like the ‘fat is ok’ groups have exerted some pressure. You’ll just have to go to the movie.

Hey, I’ve been there. Being fat may not be a choice, but staying fat is.
However, no ‘self help’ group is going to get some gargantuan human to shed a few pounds without a little pain… sometimes all it takes is for us to look into a mirror or watch a movie of what can logically happen if you allow weight gain to get outta hand! By the way, those who know me, know that I am from the old school that reminds folks where ‘sympathy’ is in the dictionary… between “sh*t and syphilis”… so — a while back — when a good like minded friend of mine told me I was ‘fat’… I shrugged which said to him that I ‘needed a second opinion’…. so, he quickly added ‘and you’re ugly ,too!’ ouch!

I can live with the ‘ugly’ part, but the fat is gone thanks to Jenny Craig… and it can happen to you too!
