In love with Calligraphy

fun with Chinese Caligraphy
Calligraphy really is an art unto itself.

Everyone in our little family enjoys expressing themselves in the arts: music, paint, sculpture and — of course — cooking. However, with Karen planning a conference presentation in China, it has unleashed the budding artist in all of us!

Most travelers who plan to be in China for any time are encouraged to adopt a “Chinese name” to aid in the cultural transition, which is a good thing. Some names sound easier to the western ears than others. Fortunately, I think ours sound fairly nice.

Here’s an interesting site which allows for some translation of your name and will even present your first name as a Calligraphy on one of a few paintings. A bit of fun!

Cal Poly, Mohammad, Warren & Saudi Arabia …Protest! Oh my!

Helping Ossama bin Laden
Warren Baker, Mohammad Noori and company did a pretty good imitation of the trial in the cult classic movie “Animal House.”

Dean Wormer: I think we’ve heard enough, Mr Chairman.
Hoover: I was told I’d have a chance to spe…?
Greg Marmalard: That’s enough. The court will now render a decision.
Hoover: Look, you said I could spe…!
Doug Neidermeyer: HE SAID THAT’S IT! Are you DEAF?
Dean Wormer: Let’s finish this damn thing.
Bluto: [Coughing into his hand] BLOWJOB!
Delta Brothers: [Imitating Bluto] Blowjob! Blowjob!
Hoover: I don’t think it’s fair!
Dean Wormer: I’ll tell you what’s fair and what’s not!
Bluto: [Coughing into his hand] EAT ME!
Delta Brothers: [Imitating Bluto] Eat me! Eat me!

The problem is that it wasn’t all that funny at Cal Poly in living color. Here are a few PICTURES FROM THE PROTEST. Check out how ‘deeply concerned’ Cal Poly President Warren Baker was throughout the entire session. He was telling folks afterwards that he never had to answer to anyone before and he didn’t like it. Oh Warren, if we only had it on film.

We are still looking for that 2000 lb. Gorrilla to take on Cal Poly!

Mama Mia Meatsa Lasagna! Fantastico!

Some of the ingredients to a great lasagna!

Part of the joy of cooking is in finding the best way to please yourself and those important to you!

A real meat lasagna is one way to appease the carnivore as well as the pasta lover. My daughters always loved a lasagna chock full of: olives, mushrooms, sausage in a lovely modified Marinara sauce with ground beef! Of course, plenty of cheese all around including Mozzarella, Romano, Parmesan, Ricotta and a few surprises!

Our secret to a great lasagna cheese layer is just the right mixture: 7 eggs, 2 lb. Ricotta, 1/2 cup, Parmesan, 1/2 cup Romano, Salt, Pepper, Garlic Powder and fresh herbs: parsley &/or dill. Chef Kristin has this mastered! (She’s probably smiling now because Kristin knows we add much more cheese than we show in our recipe).

However, it helps if you start with a great tomato based sauce… like our our “5 Chefs Marinara!” You can always build around something great! We also like to add a dollup or so of sour cream to smooth it out! (sssshhh… that’s a secret!)
So, are you curious?

Here’s our Recipe for our delicious “Meatsa Lasagna!”

San Francisco’s Chinese New Year 2008 (Wu Zi)

San Francisco's Chinese New Year 2008
This year’s theme is “In search of roots.” This is something virtually every American can identify… we all came from somewhere else…. even ‘native’ Americans.
There is something about getting yourself established in a new country, building a family and a future that sometimes lets go of the past. In letting go, we sometimes forget the valuable lessons learned… glorious victories and ignominious defeats that make us proud… and keep us humble.

Roots are important…. in the ‘Year of the Rat.’ ( I do worry that this is an election year… but rats are supposedly good luck)
Parade route in old San Francisco!
So… looking for a little fun this weekend?

Hey, baby, What’s Your level?… Mage?

the addiction of World of Warcraft
I am not an on-line gamer… for me it’s not the chat that draws me… it’s solitary beauty of the slash and hack. My favorite is Halo 3… a Zen transcendental experience offering complete mastery of the self and the universe…. or did you already know that?

However, my daughter Karen has introduced me to a new game ( new to me… I think I bought an earlier version for my nephew) called by it’s crazies “W.O.W.” or ‘World of Warcraft.’ Karen had a recent post about her experiences which both amused and intrigued me. Kristin has already been acquainted to the game… fun when your daughters know such things.

So, here I am slave to World of Warcraft 3 and it’s expansion pack… but having fun!
