I always thought I knew what a bagel was until I lived back east. It was that experience working in New York City that gave me a real taste for them. Now-a-days, salads can go for upwards of $ 35, I hate to think what a nice bagel sandwich might cost? In any event , I love to make my own!

Whether it be onion or blueberry, nothing quite satisfies like a bagel!

bon appetite!

got iPad?

got ipad?

While I was listening to Laura provide an interview to Swedish media on the positives and negatives of internet connectivity, I pondered whether or not all of this connectivity really had any negative side effects? I can’t help but see the positive aspects when one meets an old friend for coffee after reuniting first on facebook. Friendships maintained, discovered or rediscovered, no matter the form of communication are probably a good thing for both the individual and society as a whole.

My daughter posted a link to a new site for ‘foodies’ called ‘yummly’s.’ It’s an interesting site, but most if not all of the links to recipes are not from individuals but from large group recipe mills Personally, I love to search the internet and find how someone in Peoria bakes a cake or  how a home chef cooks Bobotie in South Africa. Maybe Yummly will get more useful , only time will tell.

Which all brings me to iPad. How did we get along without it?

mixing the buffet

Yesterday, we put on a fun little buffet for a few folks for my daughter Kristin. We had typical American fare:  hamburgers, chips and dips,  bbq’d ribs and  pumpkin pie; and added to it some fun Greek items:  Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), Tiropetes (cheese filled filo dough),  Moussaka ( a main dish of potato, zucchini, eggplant and meat sauce),  Baklava (honey, nut and filo dough desert) and Greek Salad.

It is a risk to put out unfamiliar items to a novice public, but sometimes you get a few who are willing to try something new and you can see a new world opening up to them!

creamy pumpkin pie!
A very rich and creamy pumpkin pie!

Okay, I have been fiddling with one of America’s favorite and sacred recipes… the Pumpkin Pie! Basically, I prefer more eggs and more cream and a slightly different blend of pumpkin style spices!

havin a party

the many sides of Kristin
the many sides of our daughter Kristin

I understand the saying that ‘we only borrow our children’ better now that they are living their lives. However, when they swing by to say hello to the ol folks, it’s nice to throw them a little party. With Kristin home this weekend , we’ll be able to fix her all the things she enjoys:  barbecued ribs,  hamburgers, baked beans, chips and salsa, brownies, pies… and a few Greek alternatives at the party as well:  baklavamoussakatiropetes, a Greek salad and  dolmades.  Have I missed anything? Probably!

Oh yes, the right beverages will be here too!
