USC over Washington in last 2 seconds!

USC Beats Washington in the last 2 seconds! NOTICE: everyone stayed well past the end of the game to celebrate!I’ll leave all the forecasting and second guessing to the ‘pigskin prognosticators’ and the ‘experts’ everywhere. All I can say is that it was a great game to watch… especially if you were lucky enough to be in the historic Los Angeles Coliseum!

I took this picture right after the game ended and if you check out the giant screen, you will see a close up of the two opposing coaches after a tough fight.

I guess the picture of Coach Pete Carroll really impressed me… in fact, most ‘SC coaches show real class in handling victory or defeat… of course, at a top division 1 school like USC and Washnigton Head Coach after the Game‘SC, you don’t get your contract renewed if you don’t win…. and as they said in ‘Ghostbusters’, “I’ve worked in the private sector… they expect results!” Nevertheless, having coaches who show class and win is a real credit to the guy doing the hiring.

It does look like Pete Carroll is giving the Washington Coach a kiss on the nose… but the noise level necessitated close contact. It felt like row 2 in a Rolling Stones Concert… only louder!

There were plenty of complaints from bloggers who thought some of the new rules sucked… but then it was their team that lost. Some complained about the officials… but I observed something else.

Southern Cal has been hampered this year by a wide range of penalties… and it just seems to me to be a way that officials are using to ‘level the playing field’. If you add ‘SC’s penalties back into the mix… the games aren’t close. For example, if you were a Washington offensive lineman, you never got called for ‘holding.’ Hmmmm…. I haven’t seen this sort of thnig since the ACC officials won the Florida game for Florida State some years back.

I’ll leave the description of the exploits of USC Trojans to the professionals in the media and others… but as for me it was a great game to watch… if you were a Trojan fan!

Capacity Crowd to watch 2007 USC and Nebraska Football Even if you were a Nebraska fan there was plenty to cheer about. However, the Trojan defense was tougher than last year and the “Big Booty” was sensational as a QB. With a name like his you can only imagine some of the shirts worn by Trojans:

U.S.C. Trojan Football Greets Nebraska’s Cornhuskers!

Trojans Meet Cornhuskers!

Saturday, September 16th, the Cornhuskers from Nebraska come to Los Angeles to meet the Trojans of U.S.C.

We have family from Nebraska (Omaha)and graduates from UN. My grandfather (Harold Hjersted) and his brother lived in a little town called “Rulo” population 32 about 70 miles from Lincoln or ‘Cornhusker Central’. Rulo was actually a big town before they moved the railroad across the Mississippi in the late 1800’s… then it dried up.

Hard to fnid places to eat in Rulo

I was a bit surprised to find this picture of one of the few places to eat in the area of Rulo, Nebraska. I haven’t been there since around 1990 or so… but I do remember that they’re next to the river and serve up great fried catfish! YUM!

Notice the flag streamers atop the restaurant?… in common language, when folks put these on their business (gas stations, etc.) it usually means, “I’m dying here! Buy something quick…. before I close!” Sorry to say, Rulo population 32 old folks is not long for this world. It’s a quiet and beautiful place.

Anyway, we’ll be heading to the game this Saturday dressed in the obligatory cardinal and gold! It’s going to be especially fun bringing a wife who loves football.

In any event, it looks like the faithful from all sides are beating the drums:

USC Football… New Quarterback… New Backs… same ol’ SC!

USC over Arkansas ... againOne of the fun things about watching football happens when YOUR team WINS! AAAh, scientific evidence has clearly demonstrated that when a male watches HIS team win… then HIS testosterone goes up!

Of course, the opposite happens if you are cheering for a team that loses… so it’s good to pick the right team in the very beginning!

Watching this years Trojans was a leap of ‘faith’… sooo many changes and sooo many new folks that one wondered… can ‘SC REALLY do it again? Add to this all the cheap talk from the folks in Arkansas… and our team having to travel to the wild hog pit of Arkansas. Well, those who weren’t believers… are NOW!

A lot of smack from Arkansas… here’s some of it:

Well… that didn’t happen! One of the assistant coaches last year thought that USC took away their ‘manhood’ and ‘pride’… how would you phrase what happened this year? The Hogs had 30% more ‘manhood’ than last year? Here are a few more fun links:

Happy 22nd!….. remember ALL your anniversaries

Roger and Laura at 17The 22nd of August means something special to me…. it is our anniversary as a couple. It has been 442 months since Laura and I went on our first date. Yep, we celebrate every month.

How did it begin? Well, I brought Laura to the 1969 USC vs. UCLA football game! I thought that this was the ‘acid’ test…. if she enjoyed this activity… well … she would be ‘perfect’.

Neither Laura or I are perfect…. but we never go to bed mad and we always remember who loves ya. We also enjoy doing a lot of activities together… I have enjoyed helping Laura with some of the challenging topics in her professional life, whether it is cleaning her office or searching the internet for her. It is the simple things we do for each other that are the most endearing.

One of the fun things about having monthly anniversaries…  are monthly reminders of how important each has been to the other over the years. It’s never so busy that one can’t say thanks or bring a flower or offer a kind word. It doesn’t take much to brighten anyone’s day.

Some of my friends have come around to the idea of how nice it would be to have someone around who really — as opposed to pretend — enjoys some of their activities. I think some of my buddies would be willing to even watch the Oscars if their wives would watch the Super Bowl with them. We still enjoy football games, together and as a family!

USC vs. Fresno State Game!

The lesson here to the ladies…. if you are a buddy to your husband… maybe he’ll remember some of the important dates in your life… starting with your birthday.
