wanna lose weight, then think about food!

Psychological researchers have taught us that thinking about food actually keeps us from indulging. I know this to be true because I have planned my holidays meals out to New Years Day!

Like most men, I enjoy beef prepared in many ways and always always in a portion that most women say is ‘too large.’ However, it really isn’t about those who don’t eat meat or eat little, it is about the needs of the rest of us! Frankly, I haven’t made   Beef Wellington   all that many times. I’ve mostly helped others make it. I really didn’t know what I had missed by not tackling this simple dish myself… it is wonderful

My advice for this time of year is to make those purchases before the big holiday rush comes as you may find availability to be more of an issue than price. Meat prices can go on sale and I’d watch for them. A year or so ago, I tweeted a manager’s special on Prime Rib at a local Ralph’s that had our local chef’s scrambling ($50 rather than $150 dollars was worth the trip wouldn’t you say?) Okay, it wasn’t Prime or Choice, but I can deal with that in the preparation. I filled a freezer. If you have a real freezer, you can buy when the deals come out and you are guaranteed availability when you want it.

So, I have to wait, loose more weight and then celebrate! This is not a bad plan! 😉

dieting? dont be too smug

How bad can a hot dog be? Why not have two?

I am on a diet today, especially after a wonderful 4th of July Picnic and an equally lovely lunch. So I thought — for a moment — that I would fix a couple of hot dogs. I thought, how bad can that be anyway? It is WAY BAD!

I love how things get disguised. My love-the-earth all natural whole grain hot dog buns were 150 calories each… by contrast, I normally fix a wrap for lunch and the wrap itself is only 100 calories! Now the hot dogs were exquisite, but they were a meal unto themselves! 350 calories is some hot dog!

To put this in relief, there isn’t a meal in the Jenny Craig plan that is over 500 calories… and this ‘little’ meals counts for 2 on the Jenny plan!  There is a lesson here,  we have to be a bit cautious in ‘assuming’ that the ‘diet’ food or the meal we ‘think’ is low in calories … actually is. It is a case of ‘inspecting what you expect!’

Woah, I am looking at things very closely now.

peer pressure and dieting

No mercy for the 'chubby' in our family!

In our family, everyone who has put on a few pounds gets a little teasing  from Karla and its poor Laura’s turn in barrel. Most people would call Laura  ‘slim’ at 5-9.5 and 132 pounds… but she ‘ballooned” up to 135 and complained. Karla drew the picture above to add to Laura’s distress! oh well! Laura’s working on the weight loss now!  😉

The truth is that our family is a bunch of ‘super tasters’ and ‘foodies.’ Given the fact that we all enjoy cooking, it means that we have to watch our weight from time to time and hop back on Jenny Craig. As diet food goes, Jenny Craig is the best… but it isn’t our food and it isn’t 1500 calories for a slice of cheesecake, either.

As for me, I am paying for my visit and trip to beautiful Florida with a full-on diet! Therapy for me is making food that I can freeze away for when I am slim… which will take a bit longer this time.

So, to all those who have found some unwanted and unloved pounds … get the weight off and you can occasionally enjoy what you once had daily… and be a lot happier.

olde port fish and seafood

Just a plug for my favorite place to buy anythng from the sea... the Olde Port Fisheries! CLICK on the picture... this is where I am going

Something about being on a ‘Jenny Craig”… for years… that gives me a hankering for something that walks, flies or swims. I have found it easiest to keep my sanity… and my diet… when I indulge in a thoughtful way.

Now, don’t those oysters look… ah… dietetic?  😉

chubby hubby’s family goes shopping!

Sometimes we find pictures from our past the makes us laugh, some make us cry and others…

chubby hubby and family go shopping
going shopping can be fun!

…..  are the ones that make us wince!

Our daughter Karla has always been the chronicler of ‘truth’ and never mean spirited but always honest. You see, there was a time in our lives when all of us were a bit on the large scale. I say ‘large’, because only a ‘rock scale’ at a local gravel yard could accurately weigh me. Of course, I comforted myself that I was ‘large boned’ and ate like a ‘bird.’ That is to say, I ate continually like some sort of primeval pterodactyl!

Four years ago, we all found  Jenny Craig and the rest — as they say — is history. In truth, we augment our Jenny meals significantly. We need to add ‘bulk’ to the meal — or as they say ‘volumize’. Our Breakfast cereal has a large practical joke  amount of strawberries, a banana and blueberries! Lunches are huge salads ( with Jenny dressing) with mushrooms, tomatoes, and capers… and sometimes additions of hearts of palm and those wonderfully sweet mini-corns. Dinner has a large amount of vegetables: thin beans, mushrooms, and sweet peppers. With all of this, I still get some Jenny Craig Chocolate cake every night!

So, what are you waiting for?

Roger

I have the above picture of Karla’s over my computer… and it makes me smile, but  happy that none of us are where we were in 1995!
