Hmmmm…. Nancy, your behavior says something to me… are you menstruating?

the Female BrainWhat is really fun in all the nature vs. nurture debate going on is how recent discoveries in biology are causing… well… some academics to run naked into the woods screaming! I have to tell you that I just love it!

The debate is at the heart of many — excuse the expression – liberal fantasies. Some people like to believe men and women are exactly the same in all ways. I shouldn’t say this … but I have noticed a few wonderful differences. These same people will tell you that Johnny turned bad because of low self esteem, bad neighborhoods, abuse, neglect, and our evil American society.  Well, ‘environment’ does affect ‘gene’ expression, but biology has a lot to do with who we are and the studies that are coming out are showing exactly that.

In an article by Peg Tyre and Julie Scelfo of NEWSWEEK entitled, “why girls will be girls” they – in part – review a new book by Louann Brizendine called “the Female Brain.” (By the way, you can pick it up on

Your medical condition — be part of the solution!

Trust me... I am your doctor

“It’s just a little pill how could there be an adverse reaction?”

Well, that does seem to be the normal reaction from a disbelieving professional. However, the question remains: how good is the advice we are getting these days? Unfortunately, most people think that doctors are closer to god and wouldn’t give them a bum steer, unfortunately, some of them think they are too! Endulge me for a moment as I present an analogy from another profession.

Years ago, I held seminars entitled  “How to become your own financial planner and save!”. As the theme suggests, I had a few suggestions as to how investors could evaluate their resources and — hopefully — find better ways to put their money. The key to the seminar was not a detailed look into stock charts or tea leafs… what I asked people to do was to look at the potential motivations of the people who were offering their products. RESEARCH ALERT: a ‘beautiful’ couple will have daughters!

the beautiful peopleAaaaahhh, I love research that confirms that I am a ‘beautiful’ person! Is it self serving to publish only those things that make you look wonderful? Nah!

Anyway, some musty old scientists have discovered that a beautiful couple will on the average produce daughters!

Every ‘beautiful’ athlete I ever met had quite a grouping of children. In fact , for a very long time, I actually wondered if old shotputters ever produced anything but daughters? I have 3 and they are wonderful.

Back to the story.  In an article in the British Times by Steve Moxon , he quotes the scientists thus:

“We have shown two things,” said Dr Satoshi Kanazawa, who led the research. “Beautiful parents have more daughters than ugly parents, because physical attractiveness is heritable and because daughters benefit from attractiveness more than sons. ” Moxon quoted research as showing: “According to research, attractive parents are 26% more likely to have a daughter than a son as their first child. It is an inexorable process that has resulted in women becoming increasingly more attractive than men”.Dr. Kanazawa also added,“We have also shown that women on average are more attractive than men, because over evolutionary history the slight bias of beautiful parents to have more daughters has accumulated, so that girls have become more and more attractive than boys.” ow! Soooo, guys are getting uglier and uglier and girls are getting prettier and prettier. Yep, seems like that to me, too!

I know I made out well on that deal.

to win fair maiden’s heart…. it starts with a laugh!

He Makes Me LaughIn “Who framed Roger Rabbit?”, the lovely Jessica Rabbit is asked why she loves Roger. Jessica sighs demurely, ” he makes me laugh!”

Young men always amuse me as they desperately trade witty ‘pick-up’ lines and completely miss the obvious. Women enjoy men who make them laugh, and men — not surprisingly — find women extra attractive if they laugh at the man’s jokes or remarks. Does this really surprise anyone?

Humor isn’t just joke telling, which can be rather boring and contrived. There are funny things happening around us all the time… sometimes all it takes is to notice it and point it out.

Some recent studies into this phenomenon have uncovered just what we expected with one or two subtle differences. First, men don’t really seem to care if their date is witty as long as she laughs at his jokes. Here is a warning for you serious types, women rated humorless men as less honest and less trustworthy and a bit more socially inept. They also rated these men as ‘rough’ (not in a desirable context).
Make her laugh... and it may be the start of something wonderful

Read the linked studies for yourself, but my take is women are attracted to men who are humorous in a variety of social circumstances. Think about it. In some small way, a little humor can lift that little gray cloud that sometimes finds itself over every woman’s head from time to time. It’s like keeping sun in the house and fresh flowers, it’s very hard to be sad… unless you work really hard at it. The man who can master this has gained a great insight and , maybe, the beginning of a great relationship.

Can Men Write Advice Columns?

Men seem to write — but can they write advice columns?

Let’s just say that I have read a lot of advice columns over the years and frankly, they all seem to be written by women. I am not saying that women don’t have an interesting perspective, but it does have a female twist and we’re the one’s getting twisted.

Dear abby
Dear Abby seems to be hitting it’s ‘next generation’ phase with the daughter taking over the long run column. The perspective hasn’t changed much. In my humble opinion, she sides with aged parents over the needs of adult children and future generations. Personally, a child’s college tuition comes before grandma’s world vacation.
