Golf is a wonderfully Social Sport

Look who's golfing? When I was young, I never had the opportunity to engage in what I would call ‘social’ sports. This would include things like: ping pong, bowling, tennis and golf.

A large part of this was how I was raised.

In any event, I had the opportunity in college and afterwards to become familiar with many of these new contests, including handball and squash… but golf was the most amusing. To me, hiting a golf ball was much like throwing the discus ( something that paid for college) and — besides — I could drive a long way.

My eldest daughter has picked up the golf bug… and she too can drive well. Plus, golf is something you can do with friends, it is the most social of sports.

Karla (my youngest) drew this picture of Kristin in action.

Halloween is Coming! SoooOoooon!

One of the nicest thnigs about Halloween is the children

Before Halloween became so ‘befuddled’ by devolving into an ‘adult party’, it was a wonderful time for adults to demonstrate some random kindness to the children of their community. It was a mysterious ‘treasure hunt’ for children.

The questions were all the same with the kids. Where do your friends live? Shall we drop by on my teacher? And…. who is giving out the best candy and treats?

Our children were also very captivated by the season and I was always curious as to who they wished to become on that special night? I made many a paper mache’ head for Kristin and Karla… but I remember one of my favorites. Karen wanted to go as “Spock.” This became quite a group production. I was tasked with making the shirt … and it sort of came out okay.

This Halloween will have far less children… but we always give out the ‘best’… or so I am told.

Happy Birthday Kristin & Karen!

My Birthday Gals of September!

Years ago, I thought it would be really neat if both Kristin and Karen had the same birthday… everyone at the time looked at me with horror. I now understand… we all like that special day to be ours and ours alone.

Kristin (September 29th) and Karen (September 30th) are very similar in some ways… they have the same parents… but in other ways, they are definitely their own people.

Happy Birthday Kristin! I remember discussing the UCLA-Ohio State Game later in the day and using a retractor during your birth…. Ohio State 17 and UCLA 13  …

Happy Birthday Karen! I remember everyone screaming when they first saw your mop of hair! Definitely some Hjersted genes there.

Although we are thousands of miles away…. you are always in our hearts.

Happy Birthday.

Jenny Craig Before and After

look how I have changed on the outside
I have come to believe that the human condition has always experienced feast and famine, which is why most of us are really challenged when it comes to staying on any sort of diet.

In the course of humans living on this planet, a steady food supply has been problematical. History is resplendant with stories of famine among the ancient Egyptians and 7 years of feast followed by 7 years of famine is a story told in every Sunday School. We remember our ‘catchup soup’ college days. Expanding and contracting our waistline is what we naturally do. Isn’t that why they invented elastic waistbands?

Until Now.

“Maintaining” a weight loss isn’t that big a deal, IF you keep on top of it and ‘plan’ the times you stray. The holidays are approaching and great — as opposed to just ‘good food’ — will be the rule at our home for those special meals. The key is that all of the other meals will be portioned controlled.New Commercial

Interestingly enough, I recieved an email with a link to the New Jenny Craig Commercial to be launched next week… very nice… I think it works…. and hopefully it will help Vallerie and Kristie welcome more deserving men in their lives.

I still have about 4 more lbs to my goal.

Southern California Trojans & the Radisson

a perfectly cooool place to stay!
Every school has these secrets. You KNOW what I mean! The secret of where you can stay that is actually in walking distance from the stadium!

In Gainesville, we found a hotel actually ABOVE the student union on campus! We could even view the SWAMP (football stadium) from our room. At SMU, it’s the Holiday Inn. At the University of Oregon, it’s the Phoenix…. you get the idea… a lot of ‘secrets’ out there.

The University of Southern California is no exception. The big secret is the Radisson Hotel right next to campus! Aaaaah…. it was wonderful to walk into bed right after the game and watch everyone else struggle with the traffic. We have done that before all too many times!

let the good times roll!
Sometimes you take a picture that everyone takes… the rainbow running from one side of the stadium to the other was on everyone’s list! My lovely bride is all smiles in victory and a shot of the entrance to the stadium and the ever present ‘white horse’!

Fight On!
