the humble Chicken Pot Pie!

the humble Chicken Pot Pie... but loved!

In South Africa, the humble Chicken Pot Pie has a Cape Dutch-Malay heritage… but variations are everywhere. Most of the recipes are wonderful … although … many eliminate the potato … which I cannot.

South Africans seem to spend great attention in the preparation their foods…. and in particular, their meats … which I admire. In that spirit, in preparation for the Chicken Pot Pie ‘assembly’, I smoked and barbecued my chicken, ham and bacon over some of my favorite woody flavors:  Southern hickory, California red oak and Texas mesquite!

Tomorrow, I put it all together for our anniversary.

Stay tuned… Recipe to follow.  Jenny Craig,  forgive me.

the fight never ends....

“The most spiritual men, as the strongest, find their happiness where others would find their destruction: in the labyrinth, in hardness against themselves and others, in experiments.

Their joy is self-conquest.

Difficult tasks are a privilege to them, to play with burdens that crush others, a recreation. They are the most venerable kind of man: that does not preclude their being the most cheerful and the kindliest.”

the SCIENCE of Kissing!

Oh… she can dance… but can she kiss?

but can she kiss?

Three recent articles caught our eye…

1) In  Science Daily  they report that:

Research by the University at Albany  shows that information conveyed by a kiss can have profound consequences for romantic relationships, and can even be a major factor in ending one….. The UAlbany study also found sex differences in the importance and type of kissing. Males tended to kiss as a means to an end — to gain sexual favors or to reconcile. In contrast, females kiss to establish and monitor the status of their relationship, and to assess and periodically update the level of commitment on the part of a partner. ”

DEAR DAD says: You can tell so much from a kiss… it goes without saying.

2) In another study reported in Science Daily, researchers found:

Men may be more willing than women to sacrifice achievement goals for a romantic relationship…”

DEAR DAD says: Well, I think the operative word here is ‘sacrifice.” Many men are willing to sacrifice much for those they love. In Japan, there is a word for ‘working oneself to death’ … basically to support one’s family and those he loves.

3) Lastly, a disturbing article about the advice college students on getting from health care professionals.

Dr. Grossman’s book,  Unprotected: A Campus Psychiatrist Reveals How Political Correctness in Her Profession Endangers Every Student,  was published in November 2006 by Penguin Group. She has been interviewed on over 100 radio shows, the FOX News Channel, and The 700 Club. Her book has received positive reviews in The Wall Street Journal, National Review, The Weekly Standard, The American Spectator, TownHall.com, and elsewhere.”

DEAR DAD says: Are we surprised? Many colleges and universities have become less a place for learning and the free discussion of ideas and developing values than institutions of indoctrination and regimentation.

Here’s a  link to a site  that shows you how far it can go.

Southern California Trojans ROMP!

Do I look smug? Yep!

Someone once said,”modesty is the ultimate form of conceit.” So let me add some well deserved praise by saying that the  University of Southern California  is a wonderful school with an  incredible athletic program.  I am proud to have earned two graduate degrees here.

Frankly, I can’t imagine having attended any school that didn’t value athletics. College without athletics is… well…. like going to a one gender school… boring. Now, I know some of my professor friends are happy to go to schools like Cal Poly just because athletics is so devalued… but it is easy to explain their disinterest… they were all picked last in grade school pick-up sports games. Jealousy sometimes lasts a lifetime.

always a fun time on Game Day!

So, when you are thinking about choosing your university experience… find a college that meets your academic interests … but also a place where you can spectate or participate in meaningful athletics. It adds the spice, seasoning & entertainment to any university experience.

Fight On!

Happy Birthday, Sweetheart!

Happy Birthday... don't worry I am not buying you a cat!Well, for those of you who are sitting around waiting for some inspiration to tap you on the shoulder to tell you what to buy for your wife’s birthday… do something subtle … like asking, ” what do you want for your birthday?” This works every time!

Fortunately, if you can’t figure out exactly what to buy… well… usually ‘expensive’ creates the most forgiveness.

Actually, as rare as it seems, I actually have found something… in the meantime,

“Happy Birthday, Laura”

Love,

Roger

PS. Karla has a wonderfully sweet greeting for you too!
Happy Birthday Greetings from Karla!
