Christmas in San Luis Obispo & Boston!

fun at Christmas!
Every neighborhood I have ever lived in always did somethng fun for the holidays. When we lived in Kingwood, Texas , folks would put up an extra lighted Christmas Tree by the curb.

In our little neighborhood in San Luis Obispo, California we have put up ‘Luminarias.’

Sometimes I miss the white Christmas experience of living in the east ( Laura thinks I am crazy) … but I have always loved the snow. My cousin Ingrid sent me the following pictures that make me feel so much better.

let's go ice fishing!

University of Southern California & Trojans

Trojan sports just like the University is first class!
The other night we traveled three hours one way to watch the Southern California Trojans ‘school’ the puppies from San Luis Obispo. To be honest, Cal Poly did put up a valiant fight for as long as it lasted… but the end was never in doubt.

Some small schools like to crow about how they really are as good as the major universities (believe me I have listened to folks from Cal Poly for years), but there are too many systemic differences to make any serious comparisons. Many who traveled down from San Luis Obispo for the game left wide eyed and bewildered.

First, I am not here to talk badly about Cal Poly… my Laura teaches there now and I did for a time as well. However, I really believe that accurate comparisons start with accurate perceptions and I think the Cal Poly Basketball team learned part of that hard lesson the other night.

The truth is that every university has a few academic and athletic ‘gems’ that they are justifiably proud … in my less than humble opinion, Cal Poly’s Professor Laura is certainly one of them… unfortunately, there just aren’t very many like her. By contrast, the academic community of Southern Cal vibrates with talent.

So, you can’t compare schools that have doctoral programs and well respected masters and professional degrees and real athletic programs with schools that have… well… much less.

Fight on!

Vanessa Redgrave an idiot for all seasons

Who's side is she really on?

Okay, it’s time to sound a little political again.

Vanessa Redgrave may sound to some like a Joan of the leftist Arc … to me she just doesn’t make any sense at all.

In history, there had to be those who opened the gates of Cartage in the name of peace to the Roman armies, others tries to negotiate with Genghis Khan and still others tried to appease the likes of Adolf Hitler and Persian tyrants… all with predictably disastrous results!

So why am I surprised that Vanessa Redgrave after a life of supporting the bad guys is now reaching out her peaceful hand to Al Qaeda terrorists?

Having watched Vanessa for years, I really can’t figure out whether she is a naive idealist… or just hates everybody in the world but ‘the bad guys?’

Delmonico’s Chocolate Eclairs!

what momma never told you!!!!
Bring on the eggs… lets say 16! Bring on the egg yolks… let’s say 10!

I am enjoying the ‘Epicurean’, the only cookbook you’ll ever need! I have loved the recipes from it… now we have a book! Karla found the perfect present for both Karen and Kristin!!!
Yes, there is some translation that needs to occur… you need to know what a ‘gil’ is ( 1/2 cup liquid) and what an ounce of corn starch is… but after you do the math… it is elegantly simple!

Here is the recipe!

Now, in the beginning, ‘Eclairs’ were small (lady finger size), made with loads of eggs and totally fab ( as my girl’s would say)!

Check it out!
